Solar Banks

31 July 2023

We all know Australians are world leaders in the uptake of rooftop solar, but many apartment dwellers have been locked out of these benefits until now. I'm pleased to say that more Canberrans will soon have the chance to enjoy cheaper and cleaner energy from solar power thanks to an exciting collaboration between the Albanese Labor government and the ACT Barr Labor government to install shared rooftop solar on multi-unit apartments. The $3.6 million investment will provide incentives to install rooftop solar on apartment blocks, through rebates and concessional loans to body corporates. Under this scheme, multidwelling body corporates will have access to up to $100,000 for rooftop solar installations.

We know that renewable energy is the most cost-effective form of energy. Investing in ACT renters and apartment owners, who currently lack access to solar power, will enable everyone to reap the rewards of the clean energy transformation. It is estimated that over 2,100 households will benefit from this program, potentially leading to a 35 per cent reduction in electricity bills for Canberrans living in apartments. Applications will open later this year.

This is just one part of Labor's plan to transition to net zero. I am very proud that we're taking this step in Canberra. It's good for our climate and it's good for Canberrans.
